My Students

I teach in a school where the student population is linguistically and culturally diverse, and which serves a community with families from all over the world. I am always looking for highly engaging, creative ways to tap into my students' hunger for knowledge and their curiosity about the world, whether it is through art, music, dance, or literature.

I see the exciting possibilities that I can make available to my students who need opportunities to explore creative and critical thinking through different learning modalities.

And I am often touched by the level of care and kindness with which all my students help each other in our quest to learn. Now, even in my 20th year as an educator, my students never cease to amaze me with their persistence and grit in learning new content, as well as their inquisitiveness, creativity, and eagerness to learn new things.

My Project

I am requesting copies of James and the Giant Peach for 2nd graders at my school to give them the rich experience of reading their own chapter book along with me, and discussing it as a class. This is part 2 of a project to get copies of James for two other 2nd grade classes at my school (Part 1 is for my own class).

It's vital for children to read high quality literature, and Roald Dahl wrote some wonderfully imaginative stories that can often ignite students' interest in reading like no other.

Although we do plenty of read alouds in my class, students are even more engaged and "hooked" on reading if they each have a copy of the same book in their hands that we can all read together.

But more important than the standards, are my goals to grow the love of language and reading in my students with a great book. I also hope that reading this book together will be another good way to build community (reading can be a social activity, after all), and to focus on social-emotional concepts through literature. With its wild fantasy plot, likeable characters, masterful storytelling, and beautifully crafted prose, I believe James and the Giant Peach can provide all these opportunities.
