Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a special education school, servicing emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and other special education classified students. The students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds; over 95% of the student body is eligible for free lunch and over 90% receive public assistance. The school’s ethnicity is as follows: 60% Hispanic, 30% African American, 8% Caucasian, and 2% Asian. These factors come together and place our children at a huge disadvantage, but we are committed to providing them with a rigorous academic and therapeutic program.
I teach physical education to these special needs students, and am trying to obtain new sports equipment. We are requesting funding for ten pairs of rollerblades, which my students can use during cold weather inside the gym, and outside during the warmer months. These rollerblades will also be utilized in our after-school "Adventure Club."
Over 80% of our students are overweight and desperately need physical activity. According to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, approximately 25 million children under the age of 18 are obese or overweight. As a result, there is an increasing need for students to become fully engaged and interested in gym class.
During physical education classes, we incorporate the school's 9 core values: Sportsmanship, Integrity, Confidence, Perseverance, Courtesy, Responsibility, Respect, Honesty, & Judgment. These are especially important as my students graduate and move on to their college programs in physical education, sports management, and other areas.
Thank you for considering my students!
