Roller Coaster Physics

Help me give my students the materials they need such as: foam board, cardstock paper, and tape, to make paper roller coasters.

My Students

My students are from a small, rural mountain community in northern California. Although we are a small school, it is important that we bring bigger opportunities to our students. As a school, we emphasize our ability to make connections with our students and their families.

Students in my science classroom are engaged in real world math and science modeling and problem-based solutions.

My students are passionate about engaging in math and science topics and using scientific knowledge to identify real life problems and implementing real world solutions.

My Project

As part of the end of our physics unit, my students are engaged in making paper roller coasters so they can learn the basics of motion by constructing paper roller coasters. They must first design and draw out their proposed roller coasters. They then build their roller coasters out of cardstock paper. Students demonstrate their understanding of various physics principles including: Newton's Laws, kinetic energy, potential energy, gravity, acceleration, speed, velocity an more in building their coasters.

The project is STEM based as students are asked to apply science, engineering, and mathematics in completing their projects.

I have requested supplies such as cardstock, foam board and tape so my students can build their paper roller coasters.

Students must first draw a blueprint of their proposed designs, then they must stick to a strict budget, and finally they must be able to explain the laws of motion at play during their roller coaster ride.
