What could be more fun than a roller coaster? Making one in the class, working together, figuring the height, writing about it, plotting the track. The really neat thing is that the kids can do the entire project themselves! All I do is supply the paper and directions. I would like for my classes to experience the thrill of making a roller coaster for marbles. In the process they will study gravity, speed, friction. It will serve as a lesson in engineering. This is a fun lesson that will produce something the class can share with the school and be proud of. Some classes could design and build one then go and share with other classes or travel to an elementary school and share with the younger students. As part of their design, they can research the history of roller coasters and where they are located for social studies and geography. For Math figuring the speed, height, direction, would a loop d' loop work? For writing they can write specific directions, make up stories about how the marble feels as it rolls along. Create a fictional family and their adventures. This project is one that allows the students to think and work together and not realize what all they are learning. All I need is the heavy card stock paper. We would love to send you pictures of our coaster!
