Roller Coaster Creations: Engineering Fun and Learning!

Help me give my students (and all of 6th grade) supplies for a paper roller coaster STEM project: 32 rolls of tape, 5 packs of card stock, 120 scissors, and 120 rulers to foster creativity and hands-on learning.

My Project

I am incredibly proud of my 6th graders, who always show creativity, enthusiasm, and resilience. They thrive when given opportunities for hands-on learning, and this paper roller coaster project is a fantastic chance for them to shine! By designing and constructing their own roller coasters, they will dive into exciting physics concepts like gravity, friction, and energy transfer—all while having a blast with their classmates.

The specific resources we’re requesting are crucial for their success.

With 32 rolls of tape, our young engineers will be able to secure their coaster designs, ensuring they can handle the thrills of the rides! The 5 packs of card stock will serve as the main building material, giving each student a sturdy foundation to unleash their creativity. Each of our 120 pairs of scissors will allow students to cut their materials independently, while 120 rulers will help them measure and create precise components for their designs. As they work together in teams, they’ll collaborate, brainstorm, and tackle challenges, fostering teamwork and critical thinking—all while having fun!

My goal for this project is to deepen their understanding of physics while cultivating essential skills like teamwork and problem-solving. Watching them bring their ideas to life will be an absolute joy! What makes my students special is their diverse backgrounds and unique perspectives, each contributing to the vibrant community in our classroom. This project will allow them to express themselves creatively while learning valuable lessons in engineering.

In summary, this paper roller coaster project promises to be an exciting learning adventure that inspires my students to explore the wonders of science and engineering.
