My students live in Oklahoma and attend a Title 1 school. They are considered below average academically,. Some of the students live in neighborhoods that are corrupted with gangs. The students all receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students are ready to learn/experience diversity to include cultural differences, acceptance, and awareness both in and out of the classroom.
The book selections I have chosen shall teach my students there are others just like them who face challenges as youth and as students. The selection will provide and show them that their voice matters. That it is A-O-Kay to stand up for their civil rights. That they should not be ashamed of who they are. And that with the right guidance, they can become contributing members of society.
The book selections I have chosen will be utilized in a manner which may ultimately teach the students how to reflect and problem solve collectively. The books shall be accompanied by study guides which will have vocabulary, questions/quizzes, short essays, and character profiles.
I am requesting one book per title because I aim to have the students develop their listening skills as well as their comprehension.
Students will learn the value of what is means to be a family. My geography students may earn extra credit for reading and completing the assignments on their own.
