This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a teacher, I am always on a constant quest to bring rich and diverse read alouds into my classroom. Ones that foster deep conversation, connection, realizations, and make topics such as diversity and acceptance the norm. Students should not be afraid to discuss their identity or the identity of those they love or in the world around them. We live in a world that is a melting pot for diversity and young children should be comfortable reading about the experiences of others. Children are curious and read alouds are a great way to build curiosity and answer questions.
It is important to choose read alouds that are representative of the community, shared experiences and acknowledgement of others lived experiences.By having conversations with young children we create a world of acceptance and understanding.
Rather than making topics around identity and diversity something students are not comfortable discussing and looked down upon.
With Women's History coming to a close I would like to have copies of the books we read about powerful women role model's in our classroom from years to come. Not only did many of the women we read about inspire us but students also realized the obstacles women had to overcome. In addition, I would like additional read alouds about Ramadan so students can understand the experiences of others.
