My students need examples of rocks and minerals that they can touch and see, instead of just pictures in a book.

"What investigation are we doing today?" That is what my students ask when they walk into my science class. They love to do experiments that are hands on. Unfortunately, it's not always possible to do hands on investigations because of budget constraints. I teach at an inner city school, in a large city. Over 90% of our students receive free lunch. Our school population consists of mostly minority students, including students who speak no English.
Even with all the disadvantages that our students face at home, and in their neighborhoods, they are always eager to learn and try their best.
Science needs to be experienced and be hands on, not just reading from a textbook. I want to pique the curiosity and interests of my kids. I want to be able to give them a solid basis to prepare them for higher education, and let them know they can be scientists or anything they set their minds to.
My students live in a large urban city, and many of them have never even been outside of the city. Because of this, many of them have never been out in nature. Most of the science they have been taught, has been through a book. If you fund my project, my students will be able to explore rocks and minerals first hand, instead of through a textbook.
Building cars, will help my students to use their problem solving skills and learn what the word tenacity means.
They will use math, science, and reading to build a car with simple materials.
