Rocks in Our Heads

My students need an opportunity to look closely at, touch, smell, (I hope they don't try to taste) rocks found in Utah. They need 15 rock samples and a black light.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Holland's classroom raised $339

My Students

I want my students to get "Rocks in Their Heads". My students need to distinguished the characteristics of different rock types. I would love to create rock kits so my students can observe, feel, and compare different rock types.

In my school, I am known as the science teacher.

The students in my class know that they are going to be very engaged in all kinds of lessons and activities involving science. Many of the 31 students are very hands-on and active learners. The more science I can bring to their hands gives them a more exciting learning experience. With these rocks, students will be able to look closely to compare and learn the about what rocks are made of and how we can tell them apart. Once students gain this understanding, they can bring in rocks to compare and show what they have learned.

My Project

My plan is to create 10 rock kits. Each kit will have the required rocks that the students must learn. The rocks will be numbered, so the students will not be able to look at the name, but be able to look under a magnifying glass or microscope to see the different characteristics. I have some rock books that the students will be able to reference, but seeing, holding and feeling the rocks will make more of an impression on my students. Students will gain an understanding of how important rocks and minerals are in their own lives. I will be able to use these rocks kits for many years with my future classes.

Looking at pictures of rocks or the one sample that the teacher has at the front of the room is not an engaging learning experience.

I want my students to be able to look at a rock, talk it over with their partner and come to conclusions on their own. This is what makes learning fun. When a student can hold up a rock, tell me what type it is, why they know that, and be able to explain the uses of that rock is more fun than filling in a worksheet and coloring a black and white picture.
