I teach at a low socioeconomic title 1 school. Our parents are hard working, usually single parents. My entire class is on free lunch status and the parents struggle to feed the children at night and weekends. Our school has started a program that feeds children while they are not at school. The last thing these hard working parents can do is support the school for much needed science materials.
Additionally, our district has a big push for reading education which has left the materials to support science without supplies. Science is best taught with hands on and experiments. Students are excited to do experiments and discover the world of science around them. They love to discover and explore all that is around them. Learning about rocks and minerals with just a textbook makes it hard to keep that enthusiasm for learning and searching for scientific answers going. We have searched and looked at all the rocks from the school yard. Students even searched their neighborhoods for some interesting rocks, however, most were sedimentary or cement pieces chipped of the buildings they live in. Additionally, my class would share all the materials with the other 4th grade classes that are at our school, so they would benefit from them this year and for future years to come.
By having real rock samples of all the different rocks students would be able to look at the world around them with a whole new perspective. Their interest in the rocks that we started with would not only be enhanced and supported, it would be spurred on by the materials you would provide. Not only would we get to look at different rocks, but the science kit would provide experiments the children could manipulate and discover. The reading passages would provide much needed reading materials that are geared towards the learning to support their discoveries and answer their questions that arise as they discover the wonderful world of rocks and minerals.
By supporting this project you would make it possible, not only to provide the materials to learn about rocks and minerals, you would be able to provide them with the materials needed to develop a scientific mind that loves to explore their surroundings and deepens the learning of earth science. You would make it possible that these wonderful young minds can deepen their understanding of the world around them and enjoy the discovery learning by following the scientific process and researching literature to deepen their understanding and find answers to questions in the materials you provide. Thank you for making it possible for these children to discover the world around themselves and build a love for learning through discovery and science.
