My Students
I am the K-12 music teacher at a Title 1 school in a small, rural area. We are 45 minutes from the nearest towns for shopping, doctors, etc. Our students consist of about 55% Hispanic & 45% Caucasian and about 70% qualify for free and reduced price lunch. All of the students are eager and excited for music every day. The students are fortunate to attend music every school day (M-Th, 30 minutes each day). My students are our future and I want to give them music opportunities that are out of our reach due to a very limited budget.
My Project
Each year, my 3rd, 4th & 5th graders participate in "Recorder Karate"--learning, playing, and passing off a variety of songs played on the recorders. These recorders, folders, and clipboards will allow the students to: participate in the task of learning to read music (clipped to the clipboards), keep track of their progress as well as a place to store their music (folders), and lastly, the actual instruments to play their music on (recorders).
Those project will make a difference because In the past, each student was required to buy their own recorder which many are not able to.
Those that are unable to buy one, use recorders the school (or myself) buys/owns, but those recorders are 5-10 years old and have a lot of wear and tear.
Each year, I have bought file folders for each student to track their progress and store their music in. At the end of the music unit, the students are able to take their music home, but many are not able to take the recorder home since they do not own it. This project will enable all of the students to own a recorder, thus making it possible for students to take the recorder home each evening to practice and in the end, keep the recorder for the next year's recorders music unit.
