Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class is a fourth grade Sheltered English Immersion program. My students are English Language Learners and their native language is Spanish. Many of my students and their families have newly immigrated to the United States.
My students have loved getting back into the classroom this year!
They have missed spending time with each other and playing together! My class loves when we read books together and they get super excited when they learn new words. It is so great to watch their passion as they discuss topics from our books!
My Project
My students are English Language Learners who often come to school in America in third or fourth grade. The majority of these students do not have literacy skills from their home country and phonics instruction typically ends in second grade. Students in younger grades "learn to read" and students in 3rd grade and up "read to learn". It's hard for students to truly engage in learning if they are not able to read and write.
Many of my students need to build foundational skills in phonics so that they can learn to read.
I teach fourth grade and so I do not get the curriculum and tools to teach phonics. By funding my project, you will help me create small groups where students will work with with me, with a group, and on their own to work on skills they need to learn to read. Students need to read in order to succeed!
