My Students

My school is a district magnet school located in a small urban community. Over half of our students receive free and reduced price lunch. I teach sixth grade computer technology and share my schedule with the sixth grade art teacher.

Our current students are inquisitive and have many wonderful ideas.

Teaching in a STEM / STEAM, magnet middle school, we try to expose our students to practices and careers that emphasize science, technology, engineering, arts and math. I have taught science for many years so I encourage students to think like scientists. That includes asking questions about how things work, exploring your environment, developing ideas and testing these ideas.

My students spend more than half of their technology time learning to code and design with computers to 3D print. They are eager to learn more applications for these skills.

My Project

My students love to build rockets. I have rockets made by former students displayed in my room. I would love to do several rocket launches with my current students but we need the engines for propulsion.

The students will build the rockets from materials that we already own.

They can choose how to arrange the fins and shape the rocket. I will develop a few challenges - farthest, highest, and straightest path. The students will be able to measure the altitude and the distance that the rocket travels. This will fit in nicely as their final science unit is Earth in Space.

We hope to get this funded before the year ends so we can have an end-of-the-year celebration launch!
