Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is over 95% Latino. A majority of students participate in the free and reduced lunch program. Students are eager to participate in clubs, sports, and activities and get the most out of their high school experience and continuing on to college.

My school prides itself on providing students with a challenging curriculum that includes STEM pathways like Project Lead the Way.

I currently teach Introduction to Engineering Design to primarily 9th graders and Integrated Math 2 to primarily 10th graders.

My Project

My students are exploring the various engineering fields and need fun activities to spark their interest in the different disciplines. These STEM Challenge kits would allow students to explore mechanical and chemical engineering through roller coasters, balloon race cars, boats and buoyancy, chemical rockets, and the importance of technical writing. They would be learning science concepts and using the engineering design process to develop solutions, testing prototypes, and evaluate their solutions. The students love competing and having winning solutions and bragging rights. Besides the obvious fun factor these STEM kits allow for more technical entries into their engineering notebooks to practice documentation.
