Rocketry Through a Novel Study

My students need 25 copies of the novel Rocket Boys (also called October Sky) as they study the process of flight and rocketry in the spring.

My Students

Would you like to be a rocket scientists? Many kids are interested in this topic, but want to know more about how rockets fly and how to pursue this path.

I teach advanced content students at a Title I school in Georgia.

These students have A LOT of potential and most love to read. Some need a little motivation, but others want to learn as much as they can. Over half of my 8th graders will be attending math/science magnet schools and need to be prepared for college prep. classes.

My Project

Each spring, I like to end the year with a high interest topic -- rockets. We study how and why they fly with some mini-labs that relate to Newton's laws of motion. Reading is one of our school's priorities, and each teacher is required to incorporate reading into all subjects. The novel, Rocket Boys, is an amazing novel about a young man's desire to build rockets after seeing Sputnik fly past his home in West Virginia. The science information is excellent, but students also learn about persistence and motivation.

Reading is the one subject that is essential to ALL other subjects.

Students get inspired by well written books, such as Rocket Boys. They see that a motivated, determined young person can reach his goal.
