My Students
Loving, caring, passionate about learning...these are just a few words that describe my amazing fourth graders. These children have a passion for life and a love for the world they live in. They are always first to lend a hand or encourage a classmate.
At first glance you would never guess the struggles these students have been through.
All of my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch, and many even get weekend food supplies sent home. Many come from single parent homes, or even a two parent home where mom and dad are working 2-3 jobs to make ends meet. They help take care of younger siblings and cousins. These students are way more than your average fourth grader.
My Project
My students are in need of engaging and fun center activities to encourage growth in reading comprehension, and language and phonics skills. The students in my class are struggling significantly with understanding both fiction and non-fiction texts, and need alternative resources other than the school provided basal reader.
Over 75% of my class is reading below a third grade level.
My students love games, and Lakeshore Learning does a fantastic job incorporating the ELA standards into fun student-centered activities. These resources will be an incredible addition to centers and for small groups during guided reading and strategy groups.
The resources below include passages with fiction and non-fiction text that can be used in guided reading. The set of fiction and non-fiction paired texts are a great way to address skills the students may be lacking from third grade, so they can compare and contrast texts on the same topic.
The folder games will allow students to work together collaboratively to play games that focus on reading and writing standards. Students will be in control and learn the importance of teamwork.
The five-minute vocabulary set will be a great way to explore vocabulary in small groups, so that students can continue to build their academic language. Increased vocabulary knowledge will make them more comfortable and confident with grade level texts.
The Can Do! games are going to be used with my lowest reading group to work on phonemic awareness skills they are lacking. The dry erase lamination on most of these resources will make it easy to use these time and time again, and with more than one group, while being environmentally friendly.
The students will take the PARCC test this spring, and these resources will help the students prepare for the test and feel confident.
