Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am honored to be a middle school drama and special education teacher in Astoria, NY, and we are about to do our first musical production in over twenty years, "Annie!" We were very blessed to be able to do this production with funding by a grant that is no longer available, and I fear that our budget will not have room for another musical next year. Participating in this year's musical has been a life-changing experience for all involved. Several students chose to move on to a performing arts high school, while others have been reading plays and auditioning for other projects outside of school. We have sold a great deal of tickets, and we have shown our community that our students are talented, creative, committed individuals. Of course, participating in theatre activities can boost self-esteem, instill a life-long appreciation for the arts, and help students choose a variety of lucrative career paths. Indeed, I can certainly remember when I was in my first school production and how this experience helped shaped the person and teacher than I am today. My students have chosen to do "Guys and Dolls" as their next musical. While our next show is about a year away, it takes a great deal of time to organize everything! After intensely studying the genre of musical theatre in the classroom, listening to the score, reading the book, and watching the movie, we all agree that it would be delightful to perform this on our own stage. The cost of scripts, cds, resources, and licensing can be very expensive, but luckily Music Theatre International created show kits that cover all of the necessities while adapting them to be "kid-friendly."
