My Students
"What lies behind us and what lies ahead of us are tiny matters compared to what lives within us."~Henry David Thoreau
My students are creative and want to share their reading connections with colorful drawings, diagrams, plot diagrams, and illustrations. Storage is needed to keep our supplies secure.
I often say that I teach "the best of the best." My middle school is comprised of approximately 900 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students.
My students are friendly, outgoing, and bright kids with very limited resources. I teach 74 6th-grade students at a Title I school, which means that most of my students fall below the poverty level.
My students enjoy coming to school but often fall short of having basic supplies. This is a hidden stressor that may impede the learning process of our kids. Because of my students' low socioeconomic status, supplies such as colored pencils, glue, and paper are not considered necessities; therefore, not afforded to these kids by their guardians. My students enjoy participating in creative learning activities and find success in doing so. My students deserve to have creative opportunities in the classroom.
My Project
My students use Interactive Student Notebooks (ISN) daily. The purpose of the ISN is to enable students to be a creative, independent thinkers and writers use ISNs for class notes as well as for other activities in which students are asked to express their own ideas and process the information presented in class. Students are often asked to glue inserts in their ISNs related to presented objectives. Colored paper and colored pencils offer "COLOR" to their interactive notebooks which allows for personalization, ownership, and deeper engagement.
I teach English Language Arts. There are vast opportunities for students to extend reading and writing into creative drawing projects such as: plot diagrams, timelines, setting illustrations, presentations, paper slides, topic illustrations, book covers, story illustrations, character depictions, and more. We need a storage cabinet to keep art supplies secure. With this, students will learn that reading is fun more than just "print".
My students are creative but have few resources to show their talents.
These supplies will provide my students with tools for opportunities and new experiences to be creative and learn more about reading with engaging activities. My students will learn that reading is more than just "print" by creating visual representations of their thinking. These supplies will add pizzazz to their daily activities. When students are engaged in their learning, their learning is deeper, thoughtful, and pleasurable.
