Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is a mixture of exceptional learners, English language learners and high poverty students who are hungry to become strong, independent and fluent readers. I teach two wonderful groups of third graders who are hungry to learn!

I am so excited to bring in a new group of third graders and get them excited about all the magic reading can bring them and all the places it can take them!

Many of these students will start the new year struggling to truly enjoy reading as a pleasure and for fun, and I believe it is my job to help shift this view!

My Project

At a time when technology is such a huge and crucial part of the world around us, my students are lacking some of the basics in school. We have two old desktop computers (one of which is my teacher computer) to share between 18 students. We are a high-poverty school, so many students do not have access to technology outside of school. This does not allow my students to become exposed to some of the technology they will experience in the real world.

We were recently lucky enough to receive four new Amazon tablets that the students LOVE to use during our reading block, but with only four, there are many students who do not get to enjoy this technology on a daily basis.

The main use of these tablets is to to help build reading fluency.

Many of my students are ELL and are still developing their foundational reading skills. With the help of apps such as MyOn and TIME for Kids, my students will be able to listen to grade-level text while reading along on the screen which will allow them to hear what a fluent reader sounds like.

Hearing the text read aloud also helps with students who may become frustrated when reading is a struggle. These tablets allow them to relax and truly experience joy from reading rather than experiencing frustration. I want all readers in my classroom to truly LOVE reading, and these extra tablets will help with this goal!
