My Students
Let it be rock! I am given the magical opportunity to teach an after school program to 30 students in the 3rd through fifth grades that could best be described as a “rock and roll” chorus! there is no funding to provide instruments to make this program work.
My school serves mostly children from Chinatown and the neighboring housing projects and homeless shelter.
Our school has a high level of poverty.
I started this program to give kids a musical experience that schools do not usually offer. The band is meant to show kids that music is in fact simple, malleable, and that song writing is not some secretive, magical talent that only those on the radio possess. Instead, I hope for them to experience song writing as a process, similar to the processes they experience with writing or art. Perhaps most importantly, the band provides children with an opportunity to forum and discuss their own lives and experiences with their peers. To achieve this objective I am asking for an acoustic electric guitar that can have a permanent home in my class.
My Project
To achieve this objective I am asking for an acoustic electric guitar that can have a permanent home in my class. This guitar will help our after school program function, as well as allow me to begin giving individual guitar lessons before and after school. Also, we will be able to use this guitar for band concerts because it is also an electric guitar.
