Rock My Boat, but Don't Tip It Over

Help me give my students kayaks with paddles so they can have an outdoor education program that builds community and culture, raises expectations and standards, increases connection between students, and develops positive associations around school and the outdoors.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our high school is a selective enrollment math and science academy located in West Englewood. My students commute from all over the south side to come here.

With the financial status looming in public education, I want to ensure my students know that they are a priority.

My students are sixty-nine percent African American, twenty-six percent Hispanic and most qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. They are hardworking and determined to reach their goals. They challenge themselves and they like to be challenged in every way possible.

My Project

There's beauty in educating kids outside the traditional classroom. With these kayaks not only will my students be challenged, it will increase positive attitudes about nature. By increasing knowledge it causes changes in attitude, which in turn causes changes in behavior. Thus, improving attitudes towards the outdoors.

They're not just learning water safety, swimming skills, and team work.

This opportunity allows a willingness to challenge oneself physically and emotionally which are contributors to outdoors and in the classroom. This class with kayaks, will push students towards enhancing self-reliance, confidence, self-esteem, and communication skills.

Help me! Increase their environmental awareness and responsible outdoor behavior.
