Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a low-income area where students have very limited access to musical instruments and music instruction. Nine years ago I started an after-school music program with ten of my students. Over the years this small class became very popular among students and has evolved into a school-wide music program. I constantly receive multiple requests from students of different grade levels wanting to be part of this special program.
Due to the limited amount of instruments, I am unable to provide more students with the opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument and use their creative energy to write original songs.
My main objective for this program is to provide low income students with access to music education.
My Project
I want to inspire and share my passion of music with my students. As an elementary music teacher I have always envisioned a music program where students learn modern band instruments and explore their creativity, while inspiring them to write their original composition and build their self-esteem.
Although our music program has been limited due to the pandemic, my students can't wait to rock out during live performances.
A sound system will give access to more students who have shown interest in learning how to play an instrument. Students in the music program will not only learn musical skills, but they will also be learning about cooperation, group work, and appreciation of a cultural tradition through music and songs. Students will be performing at special events such as: assemblies, holiday programs, and talent show. Performances will not only build self-esteem and confidence, but it will also inspire other students and the rest of the community to explore their culture through music.
