My students need 4 electric pianos and stands, plus 18 headphones, in order to implement the music theory they have been learning. They would like to play for the school's first graduation ceremony!

My Students
Have you ever felt the thrill of creating music and performing for your community? Student's at my school are simply desperate for the opportunity to express themselves creatively. We do not have the resources to help them implement the music theory that I am equipped to teach them.
My students are an ethnically diverse mix of Seniors and Juniors.
They attend a small and very new school. Since they have always expressed an interest in creating, the school thought that students would want to show their school pride and play music for the school's very first graduation ceremony. I have a vision of putting a very unique and inspiring twist on a typical graduation ceremony. The students have always struggled academically and it has been a long and winding road to get to where they are now. As seniors, they have overcome the tumultuous growing pains of a brand new school, and they have persevered as they are all now poised to graduate high school. The opportunity to play music, rather than just study music theory, can provide them with a much needed classroom environment of authentic high achievement tied to real results to show off to friends and family. They will be able to leave the classroom with a skill that can be with them for life.
My Project
The plan is to make a rock band that will serve as a palate to facilitate all different types of music including hip hop, R+B, pop, and jazz. The pianos are a cornerstone to the beginning of understanding music in action, not just on paper. The students will be able to use the skills they obtain in my class to inspire themselves, others, and their community. Having a background in transposing music "mash-ups", I plan to guide students to playing music for the school's very first graduation ceremony by blending classics such as The Beatles, John Lennon, and Michael Jackson with modern inspirations from hip hop to pop.
This project will truly effect a wide range of students for years to come.
The Seniors and Juniors will be serving as a model for what inspiration and innovation looks like (and sounds like) in new schools that younger students can strive for. The first step is having the materials. After that, the possibilities are limitless!
