Many said it felt \"like a college lounge\" or \"like a place you actually want to learn in.\" The new setup completely transformed the atmosphere, helping students feel more relaxed, focused, and ready to engage in meaningful discussions.\r\n\r\nWe've been using this flexible seating area for English, U.S. History, and Government classes. During our recent novel study of The Hunger Games, students gathered on the couches and bean bags to discuss themes of power, survival, and rebellion. The comfortable seating encouraged deeper conversation and collaboration as my students were more willing to share their ideas, debate character motivations, and connect the story's message to real-world government and history topics.\r\n\r\nIn U.S. History, small groups have used the space for primary source analysis and historical debates, while in Government, it's become the perfect setting for mock congressional discussions and civic dialogue circles. The informal layout helps students speak freely and respectfully, supporting our classroom focus on communication and participation. \r\n\r\nStudents from all over the school have come to hang in out in this classroom during lunch for a different experience that felt safer and more comfortable than the traditional lunch room they were used to. This environment has brought students together who would not otherwise have met\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue using this flexible learning space for an upcoming Civic Engagement Project, where students will connect lessons from literature and history to issues in modern democracy. The inviting environment has already made a tremendous difference—it's not just a classroom anymore, it's a community.","fullyFundedDate":1660048413082,"projectUrl":"project/flexible-seating-for-students-with-disab/6509804/","projectTitle":"Flexible Seating for Students With Disabilities","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Devine","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8495548"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_96299","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":539,"numTeachers":35,"percentFrplEligible":74,"percentAsian":14,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":47,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":26,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":63.5,"schoolId":96299,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about McCown Expeditionary Learning School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"McCown Expeditionary Learning School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/new-york-city-dept-of-ed/mccown-expeditionary-learning-school/96299"}
