My Students
My students grew up in the heart of Waimanalo, located on the Windward side of Oahu, in the state of Hawaii. This place is a very close knit community. My students come from struggling families, and they just need a lot of love! We work every day to be college ready, and prepare ourselves for the real world.
Our school is located in a predominately rural, low-income neighborhood, with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaiian and/or Pacific Islander ancestry.
My Project
The Earth is always changing. The soil of the school is mainly brown dirt and clay. Dig a couple of feet and you will find white sand. Even thou the school is just under a mile away from the closest beach.
The soil core sampling tools with help the students learn about the many different layers in the ground, the ever changing Earth, and erosion.
The cutaway viewing window on the sampler allows the learner to study the different layers of the soil. This hands-on lab will give an opportunity for the student to explore the concepts of erosion and climate change to explain why there is sand just a few feet below the surface.
The Rock Tumbler will be a fun way to see the effects of erosion on rocks. The students will learn about gems, make any stone sparkle, and investigate rock formations.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
