Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want all of my students to think of themselves as readers and writers.
I work hard to foster a passion for learning in my students and to create a safe learning environment where they will be able to grow and progress.
The majority of my students are Latino and for many English is their second language. This year I have a number of African American students as well. Our school provides free breakfast and lunch to all students. The parents of my students are hard workers and want the best for their children. Many of them work long hours trying to provide for their families. I have a wide range of reading abilities in my class from non-readers to those who are on or slightly above grade level. My goal is to meet each child where they are and to help them grow and develop as a student.
My Project
While my school has a language arts curriculum, it needs to be supplemented in several areas, especially to meet the new common core standards.
The books I have requested will enable me to enhance and enrich my language arts program and allow my students to become the robust radical readers and writers that I know they can be!
These books include both teacher and student materials.
I am eager to incorporating these new lessons into my curriculum. For example the Jacob's Ladder Reading Comprehension program uses an inquiry process with classic childrens' books to help students move from basic understanding of texts to critical analyses. I am also looking forward to using Writing Mini-Lessons for Second Grade: The Four-Blocks® Model in my Writers Workshop. Vocabulary Ladders: Understanding Word Nuances, Level 2 will help my students expand their vocabulary for both reading and writing.
The student workbooks and materials will give my students the multiple opportunities to practice and master the skills they need. Some of these will be used for homework such as the Spectrum books.
