Robots Save The Day.

Help me give my students an EV3 Lego robot to us in the Regional Autonomous Robotics Circuit to Bossier. The Regional Autonomous Robotics Circuit (RARC) is a series of three competitions for students in grades 2-12.

My Students

I teach at a small 4th and 5th grade school; about half of our school is low income. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with 50% of our students receiving free lunch. We live in a military community in a small town where funds are limited.

My students are hardworking, determined overachievers who never fail to meet a challenge.

They have very big plans for their futures. When asked what they would like to do when they grow up, I hear responses such as become a cardiologist, marine biologist, Navy pilot, pediatric doctor, and ultrasound tech.

It is my goal to meet each student at his or her academic level and help them all reach their full potential.

My Project

Students will use the EV3 Lego robot in the RARC (Regional Autonomous Robotics Circuit) challenges. The hands-on challenges serve a dual purpose: introduce STEM concepts and their many applications and reinforce STEM fundamentals learned in the classroom.

This year the theme of the competition is Marine Discoveries, students will program their robot to help solve real life problems that marine biologist might face.

Here is an example of one of the task that students will have to program their robot to complete. Marine biologists study marine life and organisms in the sea, which include marine habitats (coral reefs and oceanic trenches), plants and algae (seagrass and seaweed), invertebrates (jellyfish and octopus), and vertebrates (fish and mammals). Transport the marine biologist from the research station to the the research vessel. Echolocation is the location of objects reflected by sound. Marine mammals like whales and dolphins use echolocation to obtain information about their surroundings and to find food. They do this by producing sounds or sonar clicks that are reflected back when they strike an object. Echolocation is important to marine mammals because it allows them to navigate and feed in the dark at night and in deep or murky water where it is not easy to see.

This will help students understand how marine biologist study how whales and dolphins use echolocation needs to be transported to the research vessel to partner with engineers stationed there. Transport the marine biologist from the research station to the the research vessel.
