Robots & Machines to Inspire Future Little Engineers!
My students need an exemplary robot to inspire them to build their very own robots that will serve a purpose. The Rooma Vacuum, Robot Kits, Elmo Jr. Coding Kit, and Dash Dot will help develop engineers!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a Title 1 School, with 100% of the students participating in the Free Meal program and 98% are Latino students. My four and five year-old students attend an early education program all day. For many of them, this is their first school experience and there are many challenges that arise on a daily basis due to emotional outburst and negative attitudes attributed to a lack of experiences in working with others.
Ultimately, I want to assure that each and every child in my classroom gets the best educational foundation and positive experiences possible.
I want them to learn how to work together and celebrate each individual's strength and accept their differences. By supporting one another, many goals will be achieved and they will be on the right path to educational success.
My Project
All children are fascinated with robots! They are full of wonder on how it operates and also filled with fun. Movies, commercials and toy stores continuously shows off their awesomeness, which drives their interest in machines but especially the ones that serve a purpose. It's the purpose that needs to be address to children so their is an understanding of need and invention.
I want my students to see the real purpose of machines- especially robots!
I have requested a Roomba robot vacuum cleaner to show my students how this robot has a purpose to serve. We will analyze the cleaning machine and record our observations of its actions. The Roomba will inspire the students to observe their surroundings in a different perspective on how machines make life easier and convenient.
After analyzing the Roomba vacuum cleaner, students will synthesize the information and design their own robot which will serve a purpose. All ideas are welcomed as long as they are practical and will help make life easier and better for the user. Their are various robot kits available to support all children's robotic design ability; from an introductory level of the Elmo Robot to the more complex Jimu Robotic Building Block Kit.
The little engineers will assemble the robots and make modifications that will make the robot useful to our classroom, school, home, and hopefully the world.
