Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
School begins at 8:20 with bell work and eating breakfast in the classroom. Our classroom day is filled with math (a direct lesson and math groups), we spend time on reading (grammar, writing, phonics), and I try my hardest to push in daily science and social studies. The students and myself have a lunch and recess break as well as a daily special (PE, music, etc.). One big challenge with the kids is keeping them motivated and excited about their education.
The majority of my students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch, which for some may be their only meals for that day.
90% of my students are Mexican-American and they all hear me talk about the American Dream and the power of education. Of my 25+ students, few have college educated parents, and the idea and prospect of a higher educated life is very distant to them.
Because my students love working with technology, I'm constantly introducing them to subjects and topics that will strengthen their STEM understanding. It's an amazing feeling when I can teach the students the word "engineering", and they realize how many careers involve computers and hard work.
My Project
I am requesting LEGO robotics because they are exciting and inspirational for my students to build and work with. I love to see how excited students become when they program the robots correctly or when they attach a motorized arm the right way.
I see these kids as young engineers in training, solving problems of tomorrow.
Students will shout, "Is it time for robotics?" and I'll know that they are engaging with STEM. A laptop computer is very cool to students but a laptop and a robot is even cooler, and that's why my students need a LEGO Mindstorms kit.
