Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year, I am teaching an inquisitive group of Gifted Third Graders that are cooperative and eager to learn. They are hands-on learners that like to work cooperatively. They enjoy asking questions and sharing their thoughts and experiences.
My students come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds including the Caribbean and South America.
Most of the students at my school qualify for free or reduced lunch. Some of my students speak both English and Spanish. A few of my students have recently exited the ESOL program which means they were learning English as a second language. Many of my students have siblings either at our school or still at home while others are the only child at home. Many of my students have both parents working and are in the after-school care program or ride the bus.
My Project
The Sphero Robot will be used in class for coding and collaborative learning. Students will learn shapes and create mazes. Then they will learn how to code the robot to move across shapes and mazes. They will also calculate the distance and speed necessary to move the robot. Additionally, my students need challenging games to use as brain breaks. My students will use the magnetic blocks to create three dimensional shapes which will target math skills and improve their spacial learning. The foam frisbees and playground balls are needed by my students for recess time. When I take them to recess they usually play in the sand or on the monkey bars. By using these frisbees and balls, my students will find a purpose for recess. They will be able to interact with other students from other classes and enjoy their recess time even more. Additionally, my students need indoor games and activities that promote creative learning. Some of the games and activities such as Blurt, Phase 10 game card and Brain Teaser Fidget toys challenge and will teach my students to think outside the box.
These materials will certainly make a difference in my students' learning.
Third grade curriculum is quite challenging especially due to the retention law. My students spend a lot of time reading passages and answering questions. I believe that they need time to learn coding, technology, and also have time to play outdoors or games with each other. That way they can have time to be kids and have brain breaks.
By learning to code with their classmates, they will be better prepared for the future. By playing games both indoor and outdoor, they will learn how to work collaboratively. This will enable them to become more well rounded lifelong learners.
