My Students

My students are energetic, enthusiastic, and fun to be around. They are curious and eager to learn, and each class is a blend of musicians, athletes, gamers, thinkers, singers, and readers. I would like to provide learning experiences where we are able to solve important, complex problems together using robotics that prepare them to apply the engineering design process to the problems of the future.

My biggest goal for them is to answer how STEAM skills connect them to their futures.

STEAM incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Robotics gives me the chance to tie in what the students are learning in their core subjects to a viable career option for their futures. The lessons used in our class are based on a real-life challenge or problem, where I provide the tools necessary to figure it out, but the students are responsible for building, programming, testing, and evaluating the success of their robot. We discuss the approaches used by each group, including the creativity, uniqueness, and where each group might have done things differently.

My Project

Our FIRST LEGO League teams are in the middle of their rookie season since I took over as the coach/sponsor. In our 1st season, we have faced several rookie team challenges, but my students have persevered and continued to learn. Now, they have earned their way to the state competition in a few weeks. These robots will give our teams a chance to have 2 robots per group. Each team has 4-5 students in it, so 2 robots per group would give us the opportunity for them to build 2 copies of their robot. At the moment, each group has 1 robot, but students have to trade off between being able to build attachments and code and working on their innovation projects or preparing to discuss their robot design.
