This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember trying to solve a problem and not having the proper tools? By getting a classroom license for RobotC, each of my students will be able to learn to program the team robot.

My students are extremely diverse.

We have both male and female students participating in the robotics team. Our students come from many different backgrounds and speak many different languages at home. We are a small school, population under 1500 in a large urban city. This allows us to get to know each other better. We also have a large number of students served by the free and reduced lunch program. Funding for the robotics project is difficult to obtain.

My Project

RobotC is the language of choice by the top US FIRST Robotics Teams. For the nerds, it is a C based language which allows the students to directly communicate with the motors and sensors which help make up the robots. So far, I have been able to attract students to build the robots, but we need to go to the next step and attract students to programming the robots. I currently have a lab with 28 computers, by having a classroom set, students will be able to work independently and cooperatively to design programs. In addition, RobotC comes with a Robot simulator, making programming even more attractive.

It is hard to expose students to the skills that are needed by today's society.

The US FIRST program teaches team work and problem solving, something that isn't always done well in the regular classroom setting.
