My 4th and 5th grade students are heterogeneously grouped with varied academic levels. They are hard-working, well-behaved, and enthusiastic about learning. They enjoy taking risks and exploring new ideas.
My students find learning to be more meaningful when they are having fun and when they are responsible for their own learning.
My school is a preschool to 5th grade school that serves a population of about 1,500 students from culturally diverse backgrounds. A majority of our students are from low-income families. Our school is dedicated to technology integration and technology-rich classrooms. Our school administration and teachers provide students with a high quality curriculum aligned to the Common Core.
My Project
Imagine students' excitement when they first get to see, then hold, and then program a roly-poly robot named Ollie. I can hear the "oohs and aahs" as students get to code Ollie to perform some amazing stunts. I can hear the excitement in their voices as they discover that they are controlling Ollie's movements as it follows their coded commands. But this is only the beginning. Students will learn to solve problems that can only be solved with the mastery of programming code. How to get Ollie to travel through a maze; how to get Ollie to find the path to rescue the stranded astronauts on the moon; how to code Ollie to rescue the endangered animals.
Donations will improve my classroom by helping to make learning more engaging and meaningful as students program their robots to participate in the Robotics Olympics!
These robots will empower students to learn how to be independent learners and thinkers. They will enable them to make use of new technology tools and resources as they explore and evaluate the learning process. Seeing what they can accomplish using today's technology will help bolster students' self-confidence and self-esteem.
