Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the distinct honor of working with an incredible group of students at an urban high school in a Capital city in the Northeast. Our school is located in a poverty zone with 100% of our students receiving free meals at the school. Our student population consists primarily of students with Jamaican and Hispanic heritage. We also have students who are refugees from all over the world. Currently, we are getting students from Karen and the Middle East. Over one-third of our students are English Language Learners.

Our students form a unique family of learners who have come to know education at our school as an important component in preparing for the future.

My Project

At my school, we are developing a concentration of STEM focused units which are relevant to the cultivation and development of advanced manufacturing skills in our students. Careers in Robotics design, construction, programming, sales, and maintenance offer an exciting opportunity to our students to be successfully employed in the future. Designing, building, and programming a robot in a high school classroom gives our students the headstart in the knowledge and experience needed to be successful in college and eventually in the workplace.

Designing and Building a robot engages and empowers students to believe that they can be successful in a STEM career.

Successful programming of a robot boosts a child's self esteem and confidence to the level of believing that they can do any task successfully. I have testimonials from college students who believe that the robotics unit boosted their self confidence and belief in their ability to achieve success in college and in the workplace.
