Robotics in the Classroom: Teaching Kids to Code

My Students

Statistics show that the number of coding jobs available in the US right now is greater than the number of computer science graduates. That's why I'm so delighted that we've added a coding elective for our 6th grade students this year! Our school has a rigorous learning environment where students are given the opportunity to excel. Our coding class will be no different. I want my students to experience coding, and other components of STEM, as part of their tech education at our school. These students have already demonstrated a passion for technology and coding and I want to have the resources to fuel that passion.

My Project

Currently, we are learning to code using the software available on the computer. This has been a great experience. My students are passionate about and talented in coding so far and it's only the third week of school! However, I can see that they would benefit from the use of hands on projects.

I want my students to experience coding with concrete objects.

In addition to the two makey-makeys I have in the classroom, Robotics will allow my students to experiment with coding at a whole new level. They will develop maker skills, problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate as they work in groups to build AND code their robots. These skills will prepare them for the digital world in which we currently live.
