Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every morning, my students greet me with "What are we going to learn today?" and every Friday my answer is, "More about robots!" My students are inquisitive and fast learners. They work hard and play hard. Lego has found a way to incorporate both and adds an element of social skills they need.

My students are imaginative, hard working, and intelligent.

Though they've grown up in a small, low income town 5 minutes from Mexico, they act and work as though they didn't realize how much they don't have. Having worked in a larger district before, I know everything they're missing and am working hard to provide the opportunities for them. We are a small school of about 450 students and only 24 teachers. We are lucky to enjoy a close-knit community and strong parental and district support. Our kids and teachers strive to do better and be better every day and it's evident in their actions and learning. As teachers and administrators, we give a lot of ourselves for our students and the outcomes prove it.

My Project

Every Friday, we have time in our classroom to explore different interests though collaborative groups. My students' varied interests include: music, art, technology, writing, and most recently, robotics. With our first kit, we've been able to create our first design and have experimented with programming it to complete different small tasks such as driving down a previously designed path and knocking pencils off of books. Though our first kit has certainly stoked their curiosity, they are ready to go to another level in robotics. With the EV3 Core kit and Discovery book, they'll be able to research and create different designs and complete higher level tasks. They have quickly become self-sufficient learners in this field and often tell me that they are capable of handling the challenges they face when a design doesn't look quite right or when a program does not do what they intended. My students need a Lego Mindstorms EV3 Core Set and a detailed EV3 discovery book for building and programming robots.

The biggest change I've noticed in my students is their amazing ability to really work as a team without my constant guidance.

They quickly realized how capable they were in moving forward with the robot if they taught themselves how to problem solve instead of waiting for me to figure it out and teach them. Team work and problem solving are two valuable skills no one can teach outright, but we can absolutely provide positive opportunities. These skill are essential for their future.
