My Students

My students come from all walks of life. Even though many of them come from high poverty backgrounds, they come in with a smile. I have a diverse group of students who come together as a classroom family everyday. I am pleasantly surprised at how much they care for each other as well as other citizens in our community.

A few shining examples of student-led projects include a school-wide kid to kid coat drive, trick or treat for UNICEF and raising food to donate to a local community food bank.

Students thought of these projects on their own through the inquiry-based International Baccalaureate units.

These globally minded citizens are still kids. They enjoy learning through games and other hands-on experiences. I want to keep them engaged in school. The more positive experiences I can provide, the more kids come to school to be a part of the community. Please help me support them as they support others.

My Project

My state has recently put more emphasis on coding and programming in elementary schools. While there are many coding programs for students, they do not encourage learning through exploration.

Supplying my school access to LEGO Mindstorm robotics will encourage young minds to explore their interests in computer science.

The Mindstorm robots are more than just a robot; students learn to design and code to meet constraints. They evaluate their results and adjust designs when things don’t go as expected. These lessons incorporate problem solving, analysis skills and math, in addition to the obvious computer science skills.

We all know that giving children experiences like this can facilitate an early love of computer science. My students do not have another way to gain these opportunities unless I bring them into the classroom.
