My Students
The 26 students in my first grade classroom are diverse in every aspects and enjoy learning in our International Baccalaureate school. Students range from diverse learners to students reading at a 3rd grade level. Socio-economic levels range from Title 1 students to well off. My students come from all over the world. My goal is to develop knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through respect.
Their enthusiasm for learning is contagious as they navigate first grade.
Everything is new and wonderful, eye-opening and amazing, awe-inspiring and exciting. Their openness to new ideas and developing sense of empathy make first grade the best grade to teach. As a school experiencing community led change, social emotional learning is imbedded in all instruction throughout the day.
My Project
Last year my classroom was introduced to DASH. This robot allowed students to apply the skills they learned through code.org. At its core, robotics moves students away from the solitary computer screen to active social community. Students collaborated to program the robots using block coding to problem solve and ask questions. This year I would like to use more robotics to help learners access content areas, balancing the curriculum with 21st century learning opportunities.
By using Bee-Bots and Dash, learning experiences are designed and implemented to develop language, literacy and numeracy skills.
Students will program the different robots to solve problems with in the content areas. Students will use the robots to navigate mazes to the correct answers within the content and create their own mazes to demonstrate their understanding.
The combination of materials encourages the students to experiment within their interests making it neurologically “possible to learn well because they care. Learning is wired through the limbic system – the emotional part of the brain – which is why students learn best when they are doing something they enjoy” (McQuinn, 2018).
More than half of students from low‑income households
