The amazing students in Engineering are highly motivated with big dreams. They are incredibly diverse, and many are from abroad. They come from all over San Diego, but they choose to be at our school. These amazing and deserving students need a spark to ignite their interest in STEM! They are working hard to learn to design and program the next generation of robotic systems. Many students can already program in C++ or Java in addition to Arduino, RobotC, Python and other functional languages.
To really spark their interest in engineering, we need to take it to the next level in robotics.
With your help, we will turn these students into the robotic engineers our country needs to win the future.
My Project
Our engineering student s have an exciting opportunity to assist the Ohio State Mountain Drone Team (MDT) by designing a critical subsystem for their high altitude drone. The drone will use AI to map glaciers in the Andes which are threatened by global warning in an effort to understand the effects of global warming on the people of the region. The drone will use a lidar array to amp the glacier. The lidar array is attached to the drone by an automated gimbal. The gimbal serves to maintain positioning of the lidar during high altitude flight. Our amazing SRHS engineering students are going to re-design this critical subsystem.
The students will brainstorm their ideas for the high altitude AI drone subsystem on paper, design and test their ideas in Autodesk Inventor and Flow Design, then rapidly prototype designs using the filament in the classroom 3D printers.
Finally, they will prototype the control system using the gpio output of the raspberry pi zeros combined with classroom sensors and Arduinos.
One the designs are complete we will present our work for inclusion in the the Ohio State Mountain Drone Team (MDT) high altitude drone design. We are so excited to have this opportunity to meaningfully contribute to the important work being conducted by the Ohio State Mountain Drone Team (MDT).
