My students need a LEGO Mindstorms robotic set so that they can explore engineering on a Lego wall and Make Your Own Movie to share what they are creating with others.
Students at this school are hard working learners. They may come from homes that are struggling, 73% of them are on free or reduced lunch, but that doesn’t stop them from wanting an education. The students are multiracial, 40% white, 31% hispanic, 23% black, 3% asian, and 3% combination of races. This creates an environment of acceptance and tolerance for all. My challenge is to level the playing field so that students with less opportunities are able to compete academically with those who have more opportunities.
Creating learning experiences for these students is the best part of my job, the joy on their faces as they are discovering something new and integrating knowledge into their “personal toolkits” is priceless.
In my learning environment I endeavor to set them up to win in an environment that is inviting and comfortable. Sometimes that means school supplies, mending clothing, a bandaid, or a kind word. I believe this will not only help the student focus, but will also produce higher level of work from the student. Teaching these young learners is a privilege.
My Project
My students are crazy about robotics and they are excited to continue their exploration of coding and robotics! These materials will inspire the creation of a robotics club that will meet weekly after school in the library. I want them building and creating robots in a Lego community that will remain on display in the media center.
Making movies to share with parents and other students.
Inspiring themselves and their peers. Exploring and reaching towards learning that excites and delights them! Moving forward, these students will become our future engineers and leaders, and our library can provide resources for students to develop communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
This project will create robotic Lego wall in the library where students compete in Lego challenges on a weekly basis and so students can come in early before school to work on challenges. Students will build Lego robots or create their own Lego movies based on the robots and the Lego wall they inhabit. Students will use this as a way to expand their imagination and also build on what they learn in the classroom. This project will also mean that no one will be left out when we are coding and creating!
That's why our students love to come to the library - to READ and to explore their interests about science, technology, engineering, and math.
