My Students

You should be jealous of me. You don't get to see these young ladies discover an entirely different world. You don't get to see when they smile because they made a connection and figured out a program to complete a task. It is an honor to teach them and a joy to see them succeed.

To say that my school is an all girls school and leave it at that would not do it justice.

We are a school of diversity and adverse socioeconomic levels. We have students that are 5 years behind in reading and girls that are excelling past their grade level. We have the highest free and reduce lunch numbers in the district. About 93% of our students receive these services. The staff at OAS is committed and determined to make a change in these young ladies lives. We are becoming a force in the district one year at a time.

My Project

I am requesting Lego Mindstorms! Students will understand and interpret two-dimensional drawings to create three-dimensional models. They will build, test, troubleshoot, and revise designs to improve robot performance, and gain practical, hands-on experience using mathematical concepts such as estimating and measuring distance, time, and speed. Research and observation has shown that students of lower socioeconomic status have problems with deductive reasoning and detailed instructions. I am on a mission to progress students through fun interactive learning with robots. It may take more time but I never directly answer their questions but challenge them to come up with solutions.

My girls, my students who I cherish, are excelling in something they didn't know existed and I want all 70 of them to continue to grow in that area.

If a coed school had 10% girls in its robotics class it would take a class of 700 to get as many girls as we have in the program. With ECE and troubled youth wanting to come to class and learn, I love having this option to teach them about programming and robotics. We spend time planning for challenges and problem solving.
