Robin Hood Meets High School!

My Students

Did you ever dream of being Robin Hood? What about Katniss Everdeen? Archery in Mississippi Schools (AIMS) is designed to introduce 4th-12th grade students to the sport of International-Style Target Archery during their Physical Education Class and as an extracurricular team sport!

The 14 archers at our rural high school come from various socio-economic backgrounds.

This is our first year to implement the archery program and our goal was to reach students who want or need to be involved in a sport but may not fit into the athletic stereotype. These students are self driven and want to be a part of a team, but do not belong to the baseball, basketball or football teams.

My Project

By having a set of bows and targets to use at school, underprivileged students are not limited in their practice. Having the appropriate equipment allows students to practice like everyone else on their team. The students are placed on a level playing field, unlike other sports that require students to purchase expensive equipment.

Through the sport of archery AIMS teaches safety, mental concentration, physical fitness, and self improvement.

Research shows that the program improves students' self-confidence, motivation, behavior, concentration and focus. The program has also shown to increase students' desire to attend school. In addition to all of the above benefits, AIMS is fun, safe and can be enjoyed by youth regardless of athletic ability. I am convinced that this program will benefit students for years to come!
