Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Title 1 school in Arizona where the majority of our students receive free breakfast and lunch due to their economic status.
However, the spirit in which they come to school every day is inspiring and gives every staff member hope for their futures.
I try to fill my classroom with fun learning experiences that will give my students the foundation they need to go out into the world and make a positive difference no matter the circumstances. Our daily motto is "Be the reason someone smiles today" and my students embody that message day in and day out by making my world and the world of their peers brighter.
My Project
Many of my students have parents that work multiple jobs so the experience of sitting down and reading a book with the family is something my students don't experience often. Studies show that listening to a book being read is a key step in improving reading skills. They are able to hear how a skilled reader reads a story and it helps improve comprehension. I will use this listening center during my guided reading time so while I am working with small groups another small group of students can be engaged in an exciting read aloud while answering questions about what is being read to them in order to practice certain reading skills. The items I am requesting include an audio player with headphones for a group of four students as well as a set of 16 books and audio books.
These books are all well known and I chose this set of books due to the fact that it would help me expose my students to literature they may not have access to on a daily basis at home.
I am hoping that this listening center will not only improve my students' reading skills but will also help improve my students' love of reading.
