"Did I just read that?" I'll never forget the day that one of my students, who was reading first and second grade books with a lot of difficulty, read AND UNDERSTOOD a high-level book he had wanted to read since the beginning of the year. "I read it! I read it! I love to read now!"
This is why I do what I do.
I want to show my students that learning isn't just something you do at school. It's something that gives you the key to a door that opens to a whole new world ready for you to explore. Students enter worlds they never knew existed and understand concepts they never dreamed to imagine.
My students are a group of wild, independent, and vastly different people that, without realizing it, end up teaching me more than I could ever teach them.
My Project
My students have fallen in love with Rick Riordan and the different worlds he has created in his various series. It started with one student liking Percy Jackson...now I have anywhere from 10-15 students who are reading books by Mr. Riordan. They cannot get enough!
Students fighting over books is a great problem to have!
I often have multiple students begging for the same copy of books. Right now the hot one is The Trials of Apollo. I have a waiting list for this book!
I would love to add additional copies of Rick Riordan's books to my library in order for my students to have access to it. As well as filling in where I have some books missing (some of my books have been purchased second hand or donated and I am missing a few of the books in the series). I would also like to introduce my reluctant readers to some of his graphic novels to see if it will peek their interest in giving the books a try. Through your help, we can continue to fan the fire for reading my students currently have! They are literally ROARING for more RIORDAN!
