My Students
My students are creative, clever, inquisitive, and eager to learn more and more daily. Many are struggling with reading but love to explore books on their own. They love the challenge and freedom to choose and explore books and engaging activities that help them become successful. I work in a Title I school where the majority of my students are African American and come from a low socioeconomic background. I am blessed to work with them all.
These students are all unique and special in their own ways, including the way they learn and focus.
Focusing has been challenging since we don't have an organization system for our books. Too much time is spent looking for things like books. Every student has mixed abilities and different needs. I am working to provide standard resources for my class so that we can all perform to the best of our abilities.
My Project
We read every single day using posters, books, and audio books. However, our books are somewhat unorganized and we need some help. Having an organization station in our classroom will reduce time spent looking for just right books. Students will be able to go directly to a color-coded heavy duty book bin that will be labeled by interest or to the organization station to choose a book of interest from their reading level. They will be able to easily remove a book bin and take it to their seat to explore so many stories.
A print-rich environment is one where children get many opportunities to interact with different forms of print.
We are rich in literature in our classroom. Students can help themselves to books with the help-yourself book bins. I will be able to display the book of the day or week using the magnetic display shelves instead of having books lie flat on the table.
