Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the excitement of learning how to read? My kindergarten students will get to know this excitement as they become readers. I'm a new teacher and my resources are extremely limited. You can help by providing my students with materials to help them build skills necessary for reading.
I work at a Title I school in New Mexico.
Our school serves a high number of English Language Learners. Due to high stakes testing children are required to be reading by the end of kindergarten and it is my goal to teach them how to read while making it fun and developmentally appropriate. Children's success in reading can be directly linked to the early literacy experiences they have with language, books, and writing and I want to create a literacy rich environment for my students.
My Project
A literacy-rich environment tunes children's ears to the sounds of language. I want to create a classroom environment that encourages the construction of knowledge and the materials I have requested will help me to do this. I am asking for a variety of phonics and alphabet games that will help children develop skills necessary for reading in a fun way. Children come to school with active bodies and I am asking for alphabet activity mats that will allow students to actively engage in learning to read. Experiences that allow children to learn by doing, feeling, imitating others, using all the senses, and pretending help children develop large and small muscle control, eye-hand coordination, creative thinking, problem solving, and foster a lifelong love of learning.
A teacher must create an environment that encourages independence, community, the construction of knowledge and builds self-worth.
I will work hard to create this kind of environment and your generosity will help me do this. I want my students to discover the joys of reading and leave my class with a love of learning. Thanks for your help.
