My Students

I have the privilege to work with wonderful, curious, creative, and caring 3rd graders in Chinatown in New York City. I teach in an inclusion class (both general education students and students with special needs). It is so wonderful so see all of the students guiding each other's learning throughout each school day, be it in a core academic subject, an art project, or on a field trip.

I teach at a Title I school which is located near several housing projects.

Many of the students receive free lunch. Most of the students speak Chinese and English, and my elementary school is predominantly made up of Chinese, African-American, and Hispanic children. My school was a Showcase school last year for integrating art into academic curricula, and our students love opportunities to demonstrate what they have learned through art. This year, my class has been utilizing critical thinking and problem-solving skills through a brand-new computer science program.

My students are always excited to learn new things, use new materials, and have new experiences!

My Project

This year, I am piloting a computer science program in my classroom to better prepare students for their future. They have been learning to code, program robots, create algorithms, and debug (go back and fix any issues in their coding).

My students need more engaging activities through which they can practice their problem solving, engineering, and coding skills, and they will fall in love with the robots in this kit immediately.

With the LEGOs in this kit, my students will be able to build five different robots and program them to do various actions. They will be able to build a cat and program it to purr, create a guitar and use coding to make it play different tones and sounds, and construct a robot that can dance, sing, and pass gas (they will be laughing hysterically).

By providing them with another activity during computer science time, I will be able to have more students engaged and practicing their skills simultaneously. Please help me give my students more opportunities for hands-on learning through computer science.
