Mrs. Grande from Newark NJ is requesting Supplies through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Rising Stars NEED Starfish!

My students need dissecting kits and real starfish to dissect.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

My students want to rule their world, and they believe in the power of science to help them do that!

Growing up in a city, my kids don't have the opportunity or resources to really experience science and nature. Many are low income, and receive free and reduced lunches. With parents that work long hours just to make ends meet, getting out into nature is a low priority. Prior to coming to our school, many of them have never even gone to a beach or state park. They love science and the challenge it presents. While studying classification, many students asked if they would get to dissect an organism, and I told them maybe we could find a way to make that happen. They were too excited for me to just say no, even if it wasn't in the budget.

We need a pail of starfish so that 80 students can work in partners to complete the dissection. We also need 16 dissection kits with tools. Through this lab, students will not only discover the inner workings of an organism, they will also learn valuable science inquiry skills and lab procedures that will prepare them for high school and college level science courses.

At our school, we tell our kids to be the change. Right now, you have the power to be the change. By funding this project, you are inspiring learners who want to understand the world they live in. It's a whole different experience when students are actually able to dissect and look inside an organism they are studying. This is an experience that will prepare them for college level science, and at Rise Academy we are college bound.
