My Students

My students are a group of unique and energetic special education students from the San Francisco Bay Area. They come to us with a variety of disabilities including Autism, Speech and Language Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, Specific Learning Disabilities, and Physical and Emotional Disabilities. Our students need a lot of extra materials in order to be successful and access curriculum. Our school is a Title One school (having high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families) and there are a lot of resources we need to get to help ensure that all of our children meet challenging state academic standards. Our students enjoy anything that is colorful, visual, and hands on. Once our students are engaged and properly supported, they love learning and are so excited every day to be at school!

My Project

My students benefit from flexible seating, such as bean bag chairs, and mats. This gives them a chance to take charge on how they want to learn. Providing the students with options for seating allows them to create space for themselves to be safe and comfortable.

Giving these students a chance to learn in ways that suit them is important towards their individual growth.

Each student learns at their own pace and in their own way. Therefore, providing multiple materials such as headphones, pencils, markers, and chair pockets allows the students to work independently without distractions, and express their creativity through art work and music.

Lastly, my students need to be front loaded about their day, and have access to timers. This allows them predictability with their schedules and what is coming up next. In addition, laminating the schedules lets the students take them around to every class without damaging anything. Providing predictability with laminated schedules and timers gives my students a chance to process any upcoming events and information. Prepping each student for what comes next is important, so they are given a chance to cope with any surprises.
