My Project

Hi there! The coffee bar was rolled out last year, courtesy of DonorsChoose, after a student had shown up with his own motivational drink, a Frappuccino coffee drink of some sort, but was not allowed in the school building with it per policy! It may sound strange to some to have an entire coffee bar in one's classroom but given that our academy teaches majority adult students (16-24, with our median age resting at approximately 20 years of age) our population often have jobs outside of their education, children, family responsibilities and more stress.

One of my colleagues found that classrooms with coffee bars consistently see higher attendance and engagement from their students.

Having a hot drink while getting settled into study mode assisted many of our students in a powerful Socioemotional Manner which leads to a more productive environment for academic learning.

It's actually one of my favorite study tips for myself- grab something fun or comforting to drink and let's get to work!

Again, I realize it's a bit of an unorthodox request, but we did see better attendance and motivation after implementing the coffee bar. I look at it as something to look forward to that makes school day more special. It is exceedingly expensive to maintain as my co-teacher and I carried the brunt of the cost at the end of last year. Therefore, we look to the community! Please consider giving to fund the classroom coffee bar and ultimately, the learning environment for the young people! All gifts are appreciated.
